Assignment: Exploiting A System
In this project students exploit an existing system, mode of production or specific cultural phenomena, by inserting themselves in an artistic intervention. All works are accompanied by texts, published in a zine distributed at a class exhibition of the works, or have existed as standalone websites of documentation.
Student text:
I can count the number of apps I use on one hand. It’s not that I’m against them – I just find most apps unnecessary for life. Do I really need to check my calorie intake? Find which McDonalds near me has a functioning ice cream machine? Or prove myself as the smartest friend in Trivia Crack?
In a humorous act I decided to submerge myself into the world of app users. I found an app, Submit, which would let me submit my own app ideas with the promise of financial compensation if my app was approved. I began submitting my own apps with the only criteria that they where to be ideas that were so ridiculous that no person should ever need them.
The approval board at Submit failed to notice the humor in my submissions and went so far as to approve 4 of my app ideas for further funding. Quickly a cat and mouse game formed between Daniel Salomon, the CEO of Submit, and myself. This work documents the events that took place over two months and the interaction between Daniel and myself through submissions, voicemails, and emails.

Student text:
The idea of digital permanence, what is put on the Internet will always be on the Internet, is what most mothers and fathers try to drill into their children’s minds once they are granted access to the world wide web. Ironically enough, adults seem to be the ones who have a harder time with that. In Digital Permanence you walk through a fully digital gallery featuring different images found through a mix of different common file extensions, collected through Bing’s image search engine. What’s put on the Internet stays on the Internet.
